Starting January 1, 2020, the use of R-22 refrigerant, commonly known as Freon, had been prohibited in the US. This means R-22 can no longer be imported or manufactured due to its harmful impact on the ozone layer. The EPA had already halted the production of new systems using R-22 in 2010, and this new ban extends to all R-22 products. While you can still service your existing R-22 air conditioner, finding replacement refrigerant may become increasingly difficult and costly. Upgrading to a modern system that uses an alternative refrigerant, such as R-410A—which has been used in Texas Air Authorities units since 2010 and is EPA-approved—could be a more cost-effective choice. To determine the refrigerant type your system uses, check the label on the side of the unit. If your older R-22 system is running efficiently, immediate replacement isn’t necessary. However, if you encounter leaks or other issues, it might be time to consider an upgrade. Texas Air Authorities can assess your current system, inspect for leaks, and help you evaluate the benefits and costs of a replacement.
